24hr operation during the Coronavirus pandemic

Welcome To South West Blood Bikes

Who are we…

Blood bikers are volunteers who use their advanced motorcycle skills in providing an ‘out of hours’ service, supporting our NHS partners to transport essential urgent supplies such as Whole Blood, Pathology Samples, Medication, Medical Equipment, Medical Notes and occasionally Donor Breast Milk to the NHS hospitals and hospices throughout Devon and beyond.

When do we do this…

We do this out of hours, so Monday to Friday from 5pm until 7am the following morning. Over weekends and bank holidays this is a 24-hour service. Planned urgent transfers as requested at other times.

How do we do this…

We are a charity who utilise the motorbike skills we have for the benefit of the service we provide, we have a fleet of six liveried blood bikes, two four wheel drive cars for us in inclement weather, and a support van which can be used as an "on call" vehicle if needed, or for events.

We have teams based in Plymouth, Torbay and North Devon, with more teams planned to cover Exeter and East Devon in the near future.  Although we started operation in Plymouth, we now cover the entire county through our membership of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes.  We are the only Blood Bike group in Devon recognised as being members of this organisation.

What is the cost to the NHS of this service…

Nothing.  We make no charge for our services, and not one person in this organisation is paid for the work they do.  We are 100% volunteer crewed!

We look to enter into service level agreements with partners to deliver this volunteer service free of charge.

On our website we have details of the comprehensive ongoing fundraising events being held throughout Devon to support and fund the work we are doing in the community.

If you should like more information or feel that you would like to either volunteer or contribute to the ongoing success of our team, please do contact us or see the frequently asked questions for further information.
